Is Your Front Door Locked?

The National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association estimates that nearly one-third of all burglars enter through the front door.    Also, more than 30% of burglars enter homes through an un-locked door, window or other opening without any force!

Besides making sure all your doors and windows are locked, here are a few tips to help prevent theft.

1) A burglar’s best friend is a dark house.  Motion-detecting lights can deter burglars from breaking into your home.

2) Don’t announce on your Facebook page that you’re going on vacation.  Burglars can use social media to find out who isn’t home.

3) Stop deliveries from coming to your house.  Put your newspaper and mail delivery on hold while you are away.  Or another option is to have a friend stop by your mailbox daily to pick it up for you.  A pile of newspapers or mail is an indicator to burglars that no one is home.

The agents at American Trust Insurance encourage you to prepare an inventory of everything in your home -furniture, electronics, clothing, dishes, etc.   Keep this list somewhere away from your home such as  a safety deposit box at your bank.  If you become a victim of a theft crime, this list will help you identify what the burglars took and what they left behind.
